DANCE ME TO THE END OF TIME: TOWARDS A SCOBY SKIRT
My preliminary experiments with fungi textiles, working towards carbon negative food production. (These are not carbon neutral yet.)
Fungi and bacteria by-product of Kombucha making process. These SCOBYS were dried, oiled or not, and I am now experimenting with ways to make them hydrophobic (waterproof). I would love to make a skirt of these discs. I experimented with bigger formats and with longer fermentation times. I did get a much thicker SCOBY, though once it was dried, the resulting textile did not prove to be any thicker. Used green tea and a combination of honey, brown sugars and white sugars, and used organic ginger kombucha for my starter. If you’d like to learn more about the Future Food Salon 3: Voyage to Anthropocene, which is the project that inspired these experiments, please visit futurefoodsalon.com. ALLUVIAL PLAIN and the SIRENS will be performing in a theatrical piece for this upcoming salon series.
